Placement Information
Undergraduate Writing
Note: Most students will complete the UWRT 1101 and 1102 sequence for General Education. UWRT 1103 placement is determined by a combination of SAT scores along with academic performance in high school. Authorizations to register for UWRT 1103 are placed in qualifying students’ Banner account by the office of First-Year Writing. Students are notified of the authorization and register for the course at new student orientation (SOAR).

Math Placement (Effective Fall 2014)
- Students with AP or transfer Math credit will be placed based on the class level of the credit received.
- Students with SAT (or equivalent ACT) for placement in math courses based on the following scale (the scores are the math portion of the exam):
SAT MATH | ACT MATH | MATH PLACEMENT |
---|---|---|
< 480 | <18 | MATH 0900, 1102*, 1105* |
480 – 540 | 18 – 22 | MATH 1100, 1102, 1105 |
550 – 600 | 23 – 25 | MATH 1100, 1102, 1103, 1105 |
610 – 800 | 26 – 36 | MATH 1100, 1102, 1103, 1105, 1120, 1241 STAT 1220, 1221, 1222 |
- Transfer students, adult students, or international students who do not have SAT and ACT scores nor math transfer credit will complete the hard copy math placement test. The math placement test is a 30 minutes test with 25 questions (no calculator allowed) and students are placed by the following scale:
PLACEMENT TEST SCORE | MATH PLACEMENT |
---|---|
< 11 | MATH 0900, 1102*, 1105* |
11 – 13 | MATH 1100, 1102, 1105 |
14 – 17 | MATH 1100, 1102, 1103, 1105 |
18 – 25 | MATH 1100, 1102, 1103, 1105, 1120, 1241, STAT 1220, 1221, 1222 |
- Students who placed into MATH0900 will be provided an option of completing the online Hawkes program instead of enrolling for MATH0900. Students enrolled in MATH0900 will be also be using the online Hawkes program but will have an instructor and the classes will meet once a week in a computer lab.
- All of these classes, with the exception of MATH0900, can be used to meet a (P) goal for general education. In some majors, students can take MATH1102 and/or MATH1105 (these courses do not require MATH0900 as prerequisite) to satisfy their (P) goal requirement. Students should check with their major departments and advisors to see if they fall into this category.
- A student with AP statistics credit will be placed into MATH1100, unless he/she has other AP math credit or MSAT/ACT scores that can place him/her in higher level mathematics classes.
- If a transferring student has transferring credit in MATH1102 (but no other math credit), then he/she will be placed according to his/her MSAT/ACT score. If he/she has no MSAT/ACT score, then he/she will take the math placement test.
* Major department approval may be required.
